The work of Steve Hanks, which almost always features people, reflects a mastery of form and an intricate involvement with color. Highly detailed and realistic, his oils and watercolors urge the viewer to become part of the creative process.
An intense and articulate man, Mr. Hanks is passionate about life; passionate about his art. "I try to capture a certain introspective solitude in my figures", he comments, "and deal with a vulnerability that all of us sometime feel". It has been said that his subjects are so alive they seem to have been caught poised between heartbeats.
With a father in the military service, the young Hanks moved frequently, finally settling in the high desert of Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he finished the last two years of high school. He was a student at Berkely in the sixties, then enrolled at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, and graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California.
